Senior Home Care 101

What Does It Cover?

Over time, the way we take care of our seniors has changed. Today, unlike in the past, they are likely to find themselves alone at a time when they most need someone to take care of them. Senior elder care seems to be replacing the traditional way of taking care of the elderly, which was to place them in nursing homes because everyone at home had to work. To understand how we got to in-home caregivers, let’s take a step back.

In the past, at the beginning of the century, when people grew old they did so at one of their children’s homes or with relatives. Life was relatively cheap and the family was intact. In fact, it continued to be for many decades, until the world became diverse and people left the family geography.

The cost of taking care of the old also became too much for many. Today, with the internet and air travel, people have moved away from home, leaving parents who are aging by themselves. The internet has made communication easy, so many people feel that so long as they video chat once in a while, it is enough.

It isn’t. The older people get, the more care they need, and on a daily basis. They have options available to them: either a nursing home or elder home care. Nursing homes provide the needed care, but they strip away a lot of the freedom and independence that one would otherwise enjoy if they were at home. As soon as you check in, you have to sign a document that says that the nursing home determines everything in your schedule for you.

Home care services, like True Freedom Home Care, have managed to figure out a way to take care of the elderly, allowing them all the privacy and independence they want. They have put together several packages that the elderly can choose from. The most basic, the Network Service, means that you get a caregiver for up to 5 hours a day, five day a week. The caregiver will do a whole lot of things for the senior: they will do meal planning and preparation, dressing, shopping, toilet assistance, grooming, medication reminders, laundry and so on.

They also have a True Freedom package that allows the senior to choose a neighbor or a close friend who will come in during the day and give them whatever care and assistance they need.

There are several things that they guarantee all their clients: you get guaranteed acceptance, they will not ask any health questions, there are no claim forms, no deductibles, no co-pays and no age limits. One great advantage of this approach is that it costs a lot less than nursing home fees.

I like this line: “Home care services, like True Freedom Home Care, have managed to figure out a way to take care of the elderly, allowing them all the privacy and independence they want.”

In-home care really is a great option for anyone reaching a stage where they need extra help. When a family provides care, this can often strain the familial relationship. Those being cared for have spent their lives raising their children, and they don’t want to feel like a burden to them. Home care removes much of this burden from family and loved ones, so their time together can spent just enjoying each others’ company.

Thank you for sharing. Great article.

Great info, this could save time coordinating the services my parents need. How quickly can providers be scheduled when needed?
